Welcome!

Beppu is a special city. Despite its quiet, old-fashioned, typical Japanese looks, it boasts one of the highest concentrations of foreigners in Japan. This is a unique opportunity for the citizens of Beppu to get in touch with all the different cultures and habits of the people living and studying here.

So we thought: "Why not organizing a film festival with movies from countries all over the world introduced by the inhabitants of those countries who are currently living in Beppu?"

This is a chance for the people of Beppu to meet the city's many foreigners and learn about their countries.

We started selecting movies and documentaries and got a lot of support from APU students who wanted to participate. Now we are proud to present you 12 excellent movies all subtitled and introduced by APU students in Japanese. Some of the movies have never been shown in Japan before.

first screening

This project is also about interaction. Not only do we want to let the citizens of Beppu know more about the world through the medium of cinema, we also want you to meet those foreigners and talk with them. That is why after every screening there will be an opportunity to ask questions to natives of the country depicted in the movie. Always wanted to know more about the brutal regime in Burma, the high crime rate in South Africa or the harsh living conditions of the aborigines in Australia? Now is your chance to ask the people who lived there and experienced it!

We believe that the people of Beppu deserve only the best, so that is why all movies shown during this 6 months long project have won awards or were nominated for awards in national and international competitions. All movies have in common that they are tackling important social issues such as poverty, child abuse, human trafficking, crime, terrorism, etc... We want to make all of you aware of those issues and hope you will try together with us to make this world a better place.

Last but not least, the profits from the screenings will go directly to charity projects. To know more about it, click on the charity link above. We sincerely hope you will learn a lot from this project and hope to get your full support for the charity work we are doing. See you soon in cinema Bluebird for the first World Cinema Project in Beppu!
